Start With Your Space, Not the Router Box
Before buying a new router, extender, or mesh system, look at the layout of your space. Square footage matters, but walls, floors, and building materials often matter more. A compact concrete home can be harder to cover than a larger open-plan apartment because dense walls weaken wireless signals quickly.
Walk through the areas where Wi-Fi feels slow or disappears. Common problem spots include bedrooms at the far end of the home, balconies, garages, upstairs rooms, and offices separated by thick walls. Make a quick note of where video calls freeze, games lag, or pages take too long to load.
Also consider how many devices connect at once. A household with a few phones and a smart TV needs less capacity than one with laptops, security cameras, tablets, gaming consoles, smart speakers, and several people streaming at the same time. Choose the Right Wi-Fi Coverage Setup

Use an Extender for One Nearby Dead Zone
A Wi-Fi extender can be a good value when one room has weak coverage and the router signal is still usable nearby. For example, an extender may help cover a bedroom, patio, or home office located just beyond the router's normal range.
Do not place an extender inside the dead zone. It cannot repeat a signal it does not receive reliably. Install it about halfway between the router and the weak area, where the original Wi-Fi signal is still strong. Then test the connection again before permanently mounting or hiding it.
An extender is less suitable for large homes with several dead zones. It can also reduce wireless speed because it must receive and retransmit data. For basic browsing and smart devices, that may be acceptable. For gaming, 4K streaming, or work calls, a mesh system or wired access point may be the better investment.
Router Placement That Actually Works
Placement is one of the fastest ways to improve a Wi-Fi setup without buying anything. Start by moving the main router to an open, central position. A shelf, desk, or wall-mounted spot is better than a closed cabinet or crowded entertainment center.
Keep it away from large metal objects, mirrors, fish tanks, cordless phone bases, and microwave ovens. These can interfere with wireless signals or absorb them. Avoid placing the router beside electrical panels or behind a large television as well.
If your home has two floors, position the main router near the center of the lower or upper level, depending on where most devices are used. A location near the stairwell can sometimes help signal travel between floors. Concrete ceilings and reinforced walls can still block coverage heavily, so a second mesh node may be needed.
For mesh setups, place the first node near the main router and the next node between it and the weak area. Do not put the second node at the extreme edge of coverage. If the app reports a weak link between nodes, move the node closer by one room and test again.
Set Up Bands and Network Names Carefully
Most modern routers offer both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Some also offer 6 GHz. Each has a different purpose.
The 2.4 GHz band travels farther and passes through walls more easily, but it is usually slower and more crowded. It works well for smart plugs, cameras, printers, and devices far from the router. The 5 GHz band delivers higher speeds at shorter distances, making it a good choice for laptops, consoles, streaming devices, and workstations close to the router. The newer 6 GHz band can provide cleaner, faster connections for compatible devices at close range, though its range is shorter.
Many routers use band steering, which automatically assigns devices to the best available band. Leave this enabled unless a specific device has connection issues. If you create separate network names for each band, use clear labels such as Home-2G and Home-5G so users know which connection to choose.

If running a cable directly to the router is difficult, look at mesh systems with Ethernet ports. You can place a node in a room with weak wireless coverage, then connect a console or computer directly to that node. In some homes, using Ethernet to connect mesh nodes together provides much better results than relying on wireless communication between them.
Powerline adapters can be another option, using electrical wiring to carry a network signal. Results vary with the age and layout of the electrical system, so they are worth considering only when Ethernet cabling is not practical and wireless mesh placement is limited.
Test the Network Before You Call the Job Done
After changing placement or adding equipment, test the Wi-Fi in each key area. Check more than the signal bars on your phone. Try streaming a video, joining a video call, loading a large webpage, or running a speed test in the rooms where issues occurred.
Test at different times of day. If the connection slows only in the evening, the issue may be heavy household use or a service-provider problem rather than router placement.
